Vision outlined by outgoing Cathaoirleach

Addressing a meeting of the Kells Cumann local Sinn Féin Cllr Conor Fergusson, outgoing Cathaoirleach of Kells Town Council payed tribute to his councillor colleaugues and the staff of the town council for the support they have shown him during his term as Cathaoirleach. Conor and Peadar

Cllr. Fergusson said ‘I found myself receiving the chairmanship of our local council during the worst economic recession this country and indeed this town has ever witnessed, we have seen a rise in unemployment and emigration resulting in many retailers and small businesses shutting down.

Kells has suffered greatly from the failed policies of the previous government, we are in fact a microcosm of how this country has lost its economic sovereignty. The people of Kells and indeed Ireland have had imposed upon them cutback after cutback, tax increase after tax increase in order that our banks would not go under.

This town has survived many downturns in the past, we are a resilient people, we will survive this current recession and move forward safe in the knowledge that we can afford our children a good education and opportunities in their lives ahead.

The people of kells must learn to work together if we are to face the challenge of our future together. Responsibility rests with us all, community groups, sporting organisations, traders and the Local Authority to come together and agree the future development of our town. Whether that includes developing our tourist potential, retraining and creating new jobs and opportunities or developing our social and community infrastructure.

Cllr concluded by saying ‘ Sinn Féin will be proud to be part of this work, we intend to put in motion a process that would bring all local groups and organisations together to outline a new idea, a new vision, a new future for the town of Kells.
