TOMÁS SHARKEY

Tomás Sharkey is married to Caroline. He is one of a family of five, with one brother (Paul) and three sisters (Annaleen, Roisín and Onnagh). His father is Martin and his mother, who manages the Sinn Féin office in Dundalk, is Olive. A secondary teacher of Gaeilge by profession, Tomás works with the Teacher Education Section of the Department of Education and Science as a Regional Development Officer, offering continuing professional development to Irish teachers.
He is also National Secretary of Comhar na Múinteoirí Gaeilge and presents the Irish language magazine programme ‘Beo’ on Dundalk FM 100.
Tomás has been a Sinn Féin Councillor with Louth County Council since 2003. He has proven himself as a tireless party and community representative and campaigner.
Tomás will bring this drive to the EU forum:
"I want to be the Irish people's representative in Europe – not Europe's representative in Ireland. I will argue for the unique social and economic interests of the Irish people and ensure their voices can be heard at home and in Europe.”
Tomás has been, and will continue, campaigning throughout North Leinster. He also travelled to Duisburg, Germany in December to take part in an international panel discussion entitled ‘Where is Europe going?’
"Ireland, the sole member state to hold a popular vote, rejected the Lisbon Treaty. The Irish government's response was to tell us our decision was wrong and we must vote again. It appears the Irish government and the political institutions of the EU have forgotten that in a democracy the people are not wrong.”
